General Screening Protocols
Guidelines to Follow During the Screening Process
Child Interaction:
- Greet the child warmly by name
- Explain you'll be doing simple eye activities together
- Reassure that activities won't hurt and take 10-15 minutes
- Be positive and encouraging regardless of performance
- Ensure proper seating: feet on floor, back against chair, sitting straight
Important Guidelines:
- Children should wear glasses if they normally do
- Postpone screening if child is ill or very upset
- Score and comment AFTER each subtest completion
- Never score during the activity itself
Behavioral Observations: Watch for and document:
- Watering eyes, eye rubbing, posture changes
- Head shaking to refocus, frequent eye closing
- Excessive blinking, complaints of headache/motion sickness
